About the product
Local proofreading.
Your words, your decision.
LocuText is a browser-based proofreading tool for Chinese and English drafts. Start with a quick check, read suggested edits in the full document, and decide which changes belong in your writing.
Content reviewed:
Open the proofreading editorFor a draft you want to keep control of
Use LocuText to review an email, an article draft, or plain text that mixes Chinese and English. There is no account to create. Paste your text or import a TXT file, check it, and copy or export the final version.
The proofreading code processes your draft in this browser. Hosting and model download services can still observe connection information; see the privacy and offline notice for the distinction between draft processing and website infrastructure.
Read the context before accepting an edit
One continuous document
The diff shows suggested changes inside the full draft, including passages with no suggestions. You can keep reading the context instead of opening every sentence separately.
You make the final choice
Accept, reject, or edit individual suggestions. A final-draft preview shows pending changes before you apply them together, and keeps rejected suggestions out.
The imported original remains available during the session, and review actions support undo. Drafts and review history are not saved automatically. Follow the review workflow and copy or export your text before closing or reloading the page.
Different engines for different checks
- Quick check: bounded Chinese rules and dictionaries, plus Harper for English. It runs locally without downloading an AI model. Read the English grammar examples and limits.
- MacBERT: the default local AI option is based on MacBERT Chinese spelling correction. It makes single-character Chinese typo replacements, not complete grammar correction or rewriting. English still uses Harper.
- Qwen: an optional model for Chinese and English correction or light polishing, run through WebLLM in your browser. You choose whether to download it; it needs compatible WebGPU hardware and can make mistakes.
These are upstream technologies used by LocuText, not endorsements of this site. Their full feature sets may differ from the features available here. The engine selection guide explains how to choose.
Useful suggestions, with clear limits
Chinese quick check covers common typos and a limited set of grammar patterns. MacBERT is not a full Chinese grammar checker. Neither rules nor AI can guarantee correct meaning, facts, or specialist terminology. No suggestions does not mean a draft is error-free.
LocuText currently works with plain text and TXT files. It does not import Word or PDF documents or provide translation. Offline checks require the app and the relevant engine files to be ready in the same browser; local AI additionally requires a complete model download.
Compatibility depends on the browser and device. We have checked responsive layouts in a desktop browser. Real-phone testing and checks across all browsers are not complete. See the questions and answers for storage, language support, and troubleshooting.
